極限(Testing the Limit)

Before I introduce this painting, let me ask you a question that cuts straight to the heart:

Have you ever truly fought for your life?

I don’t mean the everyday hustle of work. I mean that kind of fighting when you are backed into a corner, when you have absolutely no retreat, and you must exhaust every last ounce of your body’s strength just to gamble for a single sliver of survival.

If that image is hard to picture, just look at what I’ve captured with my brush.

On the canvas, several massive salmon are fighting their way through rushing rapids and jagged rocks, pushing furiously toward their ultimate finish line. This is the heart-stopping spectacle of the salmon run. For every single salmon, this is a life-or-death battle.

They must swim against the currents, leaping over countless waterfalls and treacherous shallows. Look closely—I used sweeping, high-speed color arcs to paint the churning splash of water and the glistening light crashing against their bodies. When they hit the shallowest, rock-strewn waters, there are moments where they must almost stop breathing entirely, forcing themselves out of the water.

On the brink of oxygen deprivation, drying out, and near-total physical tearing, their beautiful backs and fins are exposed to the open air, enduring a violent friction against fate itself. This is the absolute limit of life. There is no decorative sugarcoating in this piece. Using rugged, heavy brushstrokes, what I tried to capture was exactly this scream-till-your-voice-is-gone, completely exhausted limit of fighting.

While painting those splashing waters, I felt a massive shock wave in my heart. This journey isn’t for glory; they aren’t doing it to show off to anyone. They even know deep down that the finish line of this journey means the end of their lives… yet that sense of mission, hardwired into their DNA, keeps their tail fins thrashing and fighting forward until their very last breath.

‘Testing The Limit’ is my highest tribute to every single soul out there gritting their teeth, refusing to bow their heads to fate.

Sometimes, life feels exactly like a salmon run with no way back. We push against the headwind of life, struggling across countless shallow banks where hope seems invisible. There are moments we feel like we are suffocating, standing right on the edge of running completely on empty.

But what this painting wants to bring you isn’t despair. It is that noble, majestic energy of life that erupts only when you are pushed to the limit.

When you look into this artwork, I hope you can almost hear the thunderous slap of their tails hitting the water. I want you to feel that determination of: ‘Even if I’m completely spent, I am moving forward.’ Faced with life’s turning points and brutal challenges, may we all summon that unimaginable, resilient will from deep within. Fearlessly crash into every ‘limit’ in your life—and even if your voice goes hoarse, do it elegantly, tragically, and with a mission, keep moving forward!”
